Anniversary (Coates)

The Rev. Herbert and Mary Coates of Greenville will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011.


Herbert and the former Mary Britt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Britt of West Lafayette, Ind., were married on September 7, 1951, at the Free Methodist Church in Lafayette, Ind., with the Rev. C.H. Coates, father of the groom, and the Rev. L.M. Gaines, pastor of the Lafayette, Ind., officiating.

The Rev. Coates was the newly appointed pastor of the Free Methodist Church in Dallas City.

Their attendants were: Virginia Britt, sister of the bride, maid of honor, and bridesmaids were the bride’s sister, Georgianna Reese and the groom’s sister, Roberta Young; the groom’s brother, Robert Coates was the best man, and Dr. Floyd Reese and the Rev. S. Lindh Young were ushers.

They are the parents of five children, Charles and his wife Christine Coates of Decatur, Celesta and her husband the Rev. David Ball of New Berlin, Wis., the Rev. Herbert and his wife Sheryl Coates of Urbana, the Rev. Gerald and his wife Janet Coates of Decatur, and Navy chaplain LCDR Stephen and his wife Laura Coates stationed in Afghanistan.

They have 20 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Herb and Mary have pastured in the following Illinois churches Dallas City 1951-1954; Hillsboro 1954-1956; Springfield 1956-1967; Vandalia 1967-1974; and Decatur 1974-1986.

In 1986 Pastor Coates was elected by the Central Illinois Conference to serve as superintendent, which he did until his retirement in 1995. Upon retiring he and Mary served on staff in the Greenville Free Methodist Church in pastoral care to senior members until 2007.
