All-weather track nears completion

The new all-weather track at Vandalia Community High School was not completed by the initial Aug. 1 deadline, but it is nearing completion.

Heavy rains have delayed construction at times this summer, but it does not appear that the track construction will have any effect on the first home football game, which is on Sept. 9 against Roxana.

The first two VYO games may be affected, however. The first games against Carlinville on Aug. 20 have been rescheduled to be played at the high school soccer field, and the second home date against East Alton-Wood River on Sept. 3 may also need to be adjusted.

The track's paving is scheduled to begin this week by Howell Asphalt Co. In addition, pouring of sidewalks around the facility was started this week.

Installation of the all-weather rubber surface is expected to be on Aug. 17, and must be at least 14 days after the asphalt base is set.

Traffic can begin on the track immediately after the rubber is installed, but the track lines can not be painted for at least three weeks.

•It has also been decided that the flagpole will be relocated near the scoreboard at the west end zone.

•A tree at the southeast corner of the facility needs to be removed in order to fit long jump and pole vault pits.
